Ship of Travel: Slavonia

Port of Departure:  Fiume

Traveling with Martin was Elisabeth's brother Anton Marmon's wife, Suzanne Marmon & her baby Marie.  Baby Marie died soon after arriving.  There is no info known about Susanne, except on her death certificate it states her father as Mihaly Kedro/Hedro? The spelling is not clear.

Martin was joining his brother-in-law Michael Schick in Atlanta.  I am still searching for this person.  On Anton Marmon's manifest, it stated he too was joining 'brother in law - Michael Schick' in Atlanta.'  I located a passenger record for Ferdinand Schick, who joined his brother Michael Schick in Atlanta.  I have yet to located these two men or learn anything of there connect to the Ingrisch or Marmon families.  [See more on the Schick research]

Ingrisch Family Photo, taken in the US circa 1917,
This photo was made about 1917,  Elisabeth was pregnant with Margaret.  A year & a half later, my Great Grandmother Elisabeth died. Story I heard was she was hit in the stomach by a washing machine crank, then cancer was discovered.

Papa was a carpenter by trade and built furniture.  After settling in Atlanta, Ga., Martin worked for Krueger Makers of Fine Furniture. Elizabeth died a young woman, in 1918. Leaving the care of all their children to Papa.  Unlike in the Banat, when a wife died, the man married soon there after, in the US, I don't think it was that easy to find a new mate. Luckily one of the older daughters, Elizabeth (Lizzie) took care of the children still at home, one was still a baby. Tough times, but the women held the family together.

[Papa, Martin Engrisch, died at home with us on Christmas morning in Brookhaven.  I think around 4 AM or so.  The doctor had come to the house early Christmas eve and told us there was nothing more he could do.  Back then they made house calls.  Mama called Lizzie and told her but Lizzie said she could not come to the house until after midnight mass that night.  She arrived early in the morning and Papa passed several hours later.  I remember Mama and Lizzie gathered around the bed and Lizzie saying he was gone because she recognized the sound of his last breath.  I remember this so clearly because I told them we had to feel for his pulse to be sure he had died.  The unusual thing is I do not remember anything else about the time.  Perhaps I finally went to sleep because we had been up all night and was asleep when the ambulance came to pick him up, because for the life of me I remember nothing else until later when other family members arrived at the house.....
