Annotations to the family registers by Heinz Hennige
Regarding the Marmon Family of Haigerloch, Germany

In general

According to the Code Civil of Napoleon I emperor of France,  the  German rulers allied to and protect by him,  install-ed civil registers, but they want to avoid expenses for the salary of a civil registrar. Therefore the priests of the roman catholic church as well as the ministers of the Lutheran and reformed  state churches. were obliged to keep the church records in a way it can be used as civil records too.

In the both principalities of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen that was to do since 1820 (in the neighborhood Kingdom of Wurttemberg it was already since 1810.

That means it was to record: not only the day of baptism but also that of the birth.

in the wedding record were to list also the names of groom and bride, as well as the date of the stately wedding concession - to get it groom and bride had to prove the fortune to nourish a family,

in the death record the names of  the parents and - if he (she was married also the name of the wife or husband of the deceased,

At least  all this information were to compile in family registers - or family group records. Well, by the marriages  found  with the date of installment of the new kind of record  the family registers were complete. the marriages that were already existing were record to, but there were some gaps and missing information.  For such it needs to prove the information by comparing it with the old church records of the time before - in Hohenzollern before 1820.

It's to say: in 1849/50 the rulers of the Hohenzollern principality handed over their sovereignty to their far relative, the king of Prussia., just since that time were found Lutheran congregations in the Hohenzollern countries. before there exists the Roman Catholic Church only.

For the Roman Catholic parish of the town of Haigerloch exists to family registers of the 19th century. The older was compiled from 1820, the later about since 1830 - or later.

The supplement as well as the original family registers  records only the day of baptism, not of death of children, infants and parents, therefore I compileted the information by several sources - which I indicated

At first  you will find a transcription and a translation of the supplement, then family group records of all Marmon families of which I could get information of  the parish and civil records of the  archives of the Roman Catholic parish and of the town of Haigerloch

There is missing the youngest son Ferdinand ,  see  page  963f

The church records  does mention Melchior  as   Kaufmann (mechant) or  Kaufherr, Even Ferdinand was called "Herr".  or "D.".

The german term/adress  "Herr" or Frau  today is used also in the meaning of "Mister"  or Mrs.

but it means also  lord/Lord  and gentleman or Lady.  In those days  "Herr"  (or  D(ominus)

Frau or Dna was only used to adress a person in a higher position - even to the members of the town's magistrate. "normal" men were listed only with first and last  name - women as  "Weib"  in the meaning of  wife or woman. perhaps you will find "hausfrau" = wordly  "houselady" in the meaning of "spouse".

To honor the office that hold Johann Balthasar (it's  like today in Germany Landrat, or in U.S.A. the county administrator)  he's  listed as  praenobilis (an increase of "noble") and  "strenuus (his spouse cited as strenua) (strong working).

                    26. 6. 1935

The list is not complete - see the filled-in form compiled by me Heinz Hennige

When Johann Balthasar appears in the baptismal records as godfather or sponsor since 1702 he's called firstly as a student.   When he married he was called a canditat of civil and ecclesiastical law as well as "Stadtschreiber" = secretary and registrar of the Town of Haigerloch,  later  also as Landschaftskassier (a kind of tax collector). 1724 until 1736 he was Oberantmann = chief of the administration office of the baroncy (later county in the american meaning) of Haigerloch. 1736 counselor and mayor of the town of Hechingen, 1748 until 1751  he's mention mayor of the town of Haigerloch, later he was administrator of the chancellery of the monastery of Beuron in the Danube Valley The death of Balthasar Marmon as well as that of his wife are not listed in the Haigerloch church records.

The Town's of Haigerloch contract protocoll does mention: a) March 3, 1756: Johann Balthasar Marmon, administrator of the cancellery at Beuron solds "toward his beloved son Franz Joseph Marmon, citizen and artist painter here (in Haigerloch)"  some lots.  January 28, 1757 his both sons and his son-in-law, Joseph Lechleuter solds some lots. Even on Feb. 1757 Caspar Marmon solds to his beloved brother Franz Joseph, citizen and artist painter a lot of 2 roods grassland. Therefore I supposed Balthasar has been died before, but then I found there were sold some lots on March 13, and  June 1. 1757 Balthasar Marmon is mention as owner of  adjacent lots:

on June 8, 1757;   Sep. 11,  1757 are mentioned  the "Marmon heirs" but it isn't   clear  which deceased Marmon it means.

In the church records concerning baptism  at the Upper Town,  a Franz Xaver Marmon and later a J. Balthasar Marmon are cited as beneficiatus at St. Antony the hermit - patron of an Altar in St. Ulrich and also of the chaplany of the Upper Town. The right to install a priest on this benefit was with the Town's counxel as well as the parish priest. I realized that the holder of that benefit very often were sons of citizens of Haigerloch, and was a springboard to a better position. By the year of birth it is suppose this both Marmon were sons of  J. Balthasar  Marmon.

On the back of  page 963b  is picked up a  postcard with a message of the rectory of the roman catholic parish of the former Free Imperial City of Rottweil  (until 1803 it was an independant Republic in the Sacred Roman Empire of German Nation, after a town in the Kingdom of Wurttemberg

the message reads:

"answer:

The death record reads "1798  obiit (12. April der Ehrgeachte Xaveri Marmon sel

deren Tugendsamen Catharina Zipflin und Veronica Mathauerin beed seliger ehelicher Hauswirt gewesen.  (1798 died on 12, April the honorable late Xavier Marmon who had been the husband of the both late1 virtuous Catharina Zipfel and Veronica Mathauer) .

The wedding records reads: "Marmon Franz Xaver,  kath. von Haigerloch und Catharina Zipfel

12 Mai Mai 1755 matrimonii copulati  .......".  ( Marmon Franz Xaver rom. cath. from Haigerloch  and Catharina Zipfel  on 12. May  1755  were given in marriage one to the other)  and furthermore  "matrimonialiter copulati  perhonestus viduus Franc. Xav. Marmon  cum pud. Veronica Mathauerin 17 Junii 1776    (given in marriage: the honest widower Franc. Xav. Marmon to the chaste Veronica   Mathauer  on June 1776)   More we can't  realize from our registers. In the Family register  as the parents of Alois Marmon, beer brewer and  landlord of the Ox  Inn, are record: Xaveri Marmon  citizen,  landlord of the Ox Inn  and Veronica Mathauer,  ages are never indicated.

Rottweil , 27. June 1935.

At  Rottweil  Franz Xaver Marmon became landlord of the "Red Ox Inn"  and  Master of the "fools' guild" it's to say: here in the roman catholic parts of the south west of Germany  "fool"

is also a synonyme of "carnivalist" means them who bears the tradional local carnival costumes.

The oldest wooden carved masks that survived in Haigerloch are from the 2nd half of the 18th century  when Franz Xaver Marmon lived in Rottweil  and his cousin Franz Joseph worked there as an artist painter and foreman of the crew of the famous painter Meinrad von Au of Sigmaringen who  made - among other works -  the ceiling paintings in the  Castle (and parish) Church  and the pilgrimage church of St. Anna in Haigerloch.

The father Blasius  passed away  already  in 1735. Keeper of the Plow Inn  became at first his posthumous son-in-law Philipp Wicker,  husband of Rosina Marmon. Since about 1750 Blasius' son Joseph is  mentioned as the landlord of the "Plow Inn".

The son Fidelis  emigrated to "Hungary" past  1748  The notice in W. Hacker's  index of emigrants from Hohenzollern to South-East Europe contents an error   which have to be clear by  looking the original text in the office protocol of the administration of  the baroncy of Haigerloch.  Even to clear should be which of  Fidelis sisters has been emigrate.

 Here ends  the supplement.

It is to say  all the dates in figures are given in the German way: day, month, year.

The early church records lists the work of the priest: the giving of  baptism, confirmation, marriage and last rites - enterment respectively. Therefore if it is listed only one date in the baptismal record  it is that of baptism, not of birth which took place one or two days before.

On Oct. 23, 1777 Franz Joseph solds some lots to his fa-ther-in-law  Matthew Schullian and signed the contract by his own hand, That proves he was still living at this time.

* Date o Barbara's baptism doesn't fit to the entry to the wedding wherethe bride is called "the honest and very pious virgin" so it's less probable she had given  birth to a child before the wedding

The son of Crescentia is ksted  in the baptismal record as Franz Joseph in the death record as Joseph Adam

there is not to find the baptism  and confirmation of a Catharina to the several Schullian families in the Haiger-loch church records.

According the contract protocols that survived in the town's archives of Haigeerloch  Franz Joseph Marmon was the son-in-law of Matthaeus Schullian.

in the baptismal record: Caspar Sebastian,  the wedding records reads Caspar Balthasar

the contract protocol of Dec. 17, 1766 does mention Rosina Egg as "the late Caspar Marmon's widow".

The dead redord reads "Rosalia Egg, widow, provide with all (last rites) age 83 years, there is often mixed

That this Carl. Marmon was the son of Balthasar, is not clear proved, but there are several clues:  The son Carl of Ferdinand Marmon who was born in 1740,  doesn't appear in the confirmation list of 1747., therefore it is mention in the contract protocols that Carl, son of Balthasar was still living in 1767.  In the wedding contract of Johannes Zimmer mann and Rosina Eger, Franz Joseph Marmon appears  as a witness

It seems a little strange: that wedding contract says Rosina Eger brings to the marrriage a girl of the age of 7 years, named Theresia born to her first marriage. Indeed the child was just 3 years, two months and two weeks old
