Ingolstadt, Germany - July 2005

Take a walk down a path that leads to little Schrebergarten
(summer houses) and peek over the gates...

Little Schrebergarten (Schreber Garden) allotments, named after a 19th-century German doctor who didn't invent them, but rather organized them. You will find these in the most unlikely places, for instance, directly between factories and railroad embankments.

It's a quite walk down the path going to Werner & Lissi's place, but I know when I get there I'll be greeted with hugs and kisses and a big welcome.  There are about 40-50 little summer houses located on private property, owned by one person.  The lots are sectioned off and a leased out.  The renters can not live there, they live in the town.  It's a great little getaway place.  The summer houses are a place to relax and barbecue and sit under the shade trees.  You will see on all the lots vegetable and flower gardens and most all have grape vines.  There is no plumbing on the property, but they do have wells.  The renters can build anything they want on their lot, of course it stays with the property when they leave though.   What a unique idea, rental space for those who do not have place for a garden at their home.
